First Round of Gul RS300 2001 Racing Circuit at Northampton
Author: RS AssociationThe RS Association has held a Racing Circuit event at Northampton SC every year for the last six years and the weather gods have always graced the event with strong winds. This year was no different with the RS300 GUL Racing Circuit starting off in style at Northampton on Saturday March 31 with a force 5-6, sunshine, spectacular racing and capsizing on the opening day! The great MAFF god had also been kind by allowing the Club to re-open; it had been shut for three weeks due to Foot and Mouth.
RS300's can be a real challenge downwind in such strong wind and the spectators were treated to a master class of heavy wind sailing by Wil Gullivar who always seemed to be in total control to win all three races and was never led at a mark. Matt Critchley hung on bravely to Wil's slipstream
to record three second places. Behind Steve Middleton and Graham Sanderson did well to record useful results.
The shattered bodies were very grateful to see a gentle breeze on Sunday morning and warm sunshine although not too sure about warnings of a 7ft Pike. Racing took place in a very patchy force 2-3 and although Wil Gullivar still scored three first places he did not have it all his own way. Matt
Critchley and Steve Middleton led races, Middleton lost his glasses and had to retire. Richard Willows in particular gave Gullivar plenty to think about chasing him hard in race 4 and leading Race 5 for a good time before running into trouble at a gybe mark. At the end though nobody could stop the all conquering Gullivar.
Northampton did an excellent job of organising the event and laying good courses, food, entertainment; special mention should be made of Pete Vincent taking foot in mouth to a new art form at the prize giving.
