The Race goes on
After a finish fittingly celebrated in Marseilles, Team Adventure, the third catamaran in The Race is tied up alongside the winners' pontoon in front of the Town Hall. Very satisfied with the behaviour of the boat, Cam Lewis and his crew are full of ambitions for the months to come, with notably an attempt on the east-west Atlantic crossing record between Cadiz and San Salvador, held since last summer by Club Med. Monster.com has decided to extend its partnership with the boat, becoming in fact the main sponsor of the team.
For the two other competitors, the race goes on. It is obvious that these two boats will be finishing the race out of time (deadline 30 days after the finish of the first, or April 2nd 2001), this rule having been defined by the challengers themselves. However the organisers have decided to leave the line open to allow the boats to finish in Marseilles, come what may, even if it is quite clear that the challengers will be continuing to race under their own responsibilities as from April 2nd.
The boats will be declared finished, fourth and fifth, out of the time limits. The Race will continue to follow-up their progress and distribute press coverage via the Press Office and the Internet site www.therace.org. As for the town of Marseilles, it will be reserving the warmest welcome for both boats as they finish.
In the meantime, Warta-Polpharma left Portaleza yesterday at 1530 GMT to get back into the race, this race that the crew is so determined to finish. Unfortunately, two members of crew have had to leave the boat for medical reasons. They are Richard Block and Piotr Cichocki who is suffering from
abscesses to his left leg. He will have to spend a day under observation in
hospital today.
This morning Team Legato was ranked ahead of Warta-Polpharma, the two boats are not at all on the same longitude. However these last two competitors in The Race promise us a good battle as far as the finish. This morning Team Legato was making fast progress, 19/20 knots, while Warta-Polpharma was bogged down in light airs. Both boats have in their sights, the crossing of the Equator and the Doldrums.
