Blazes at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club
Author: Andy Skynner
As part of the Topper Gala event at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club, Blazes
held their first Sobstad Blaze Travellers event on the 26th & 27th of March
in conditions that varied from zero wind to strong winds combined with hail
stones and rain.
RACE 1:
- Chris Coleman from Warsash took the lead at the windward mark and
slowly pulled away from Andy Skynner, Mike Lyons and Oliver Daniels.
However when it looked as though he had the race in the bag, the wind
dropped of to zero which allowed Mike Lyons of Burghfield to creep though
and win followed by David Evans of Calshot and Andy Skynner of Chichester.
RACE 2:
- Mike Lyons got away well to be first at the windward mark followed
by Skynner and Coleman. By the second beat the wind had increased
considerably and Coleman made good use his height and weight to pull
through Skynner. He could not catch Lyons however who held on to win from
Coleman, Skynner and Daniels.
RACE 3:
- Following a delay during which to course was adjusted to suit the
constantly changing wind, Coleman made a good start to be first at the
windward mark followed by Daniel Oliver of Sutton Ashfield and Skynner.
Daniels then pulled through Coleman to win by a good margin with Skynner
again taking third place.
RACE 4:
- Skynner lead at the windward mark followed by Coleman and Daniels
the wind then increased considerably and Coleman and Daniels pulled through
Skynner on the second beat. These positions were held to the finish.
RACE 5:
- In stronger winds Coleman lead at the windward mark followed by
Skynner and Daniels. Whilst Coleman was never troubled, Daniels and Skynner
swopped places a few times until an ill timed covering tack by Skynner
followed by a capsize, allowed Daniels to get away and take second place
with Skynner coming home in third place.
