441 miles to go to Cape Horn for Club Med

Author: The Race Media

Currently 441 miles from Cape Horn, Club Med must feel her bows shaking and the beautiful water nymph on the bows must be shivering at the thought that at long last she is going to be welcomed into the hallowed ranks of those who have rounded Cape Horn. She will never the less have to wait a little longer than expected as the boat is currently a little slowed by an area of " light air ", a might frustrating in this part of the world ... In any case, the scene has been set. South of the Club Med lie the South Shetland Islands, where low pressure is generating strong winds. Close to Cape Horn, however, there is not much wind but heavy seas ! Grant will have to choose whose side he is on, to round that symbolic piece of land, Tierra del Fuego, as best he can, or at least as fast as he can. ...

When the leader slows down, the second-placed always perks up. For once it was Innovation Explorer's turn to cover 120 miles more than her closest competitor, although not always in the "right" direction. This morning, the boat made a left turn and is sailing on a port tack in stable west-north-west winds. This morning's 7h00 position fix placed both boats more or less on the same latitude and it looks like they have opted to round the Horn fairly close to land.

Team Adventure sailed into waters new last night as she passed Tasmania's eastern line of longitude. The Pacific lies ahead but her playing field is somewhat reduced to a corridor marked out by an area of high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south, both " heavyweights " in their class. Here again she is going to have to aim straight if she is to reach the extreme south-western tip of New Zealand 750 miles away. In any case, Cam Lewis and his crew are not lightening up and yesterday's series of dead halts into waves, no doubt brought back one or two bad memories.

Finally some fresh news from Warta Polpharma with Dariusz Drapella during yesterday's radio chat session. As the crew have been unable to make it to the place they were hoping for, they have been able to preserve the boat they have spurs to prick the sides of their intent. Roman Paszke and his crew are galloping along at 20 knots with their eyes firmly fixed dead ahead.

Just as well, because coming up the rear, ... Team Legato has now reduced her gap to 900 miles with just one objective in mind : getting as close as she can to the stern of the other historic boat. Another carrot to spur Tony Bullimore's crew ever onwards, tomorrow they should pass the second Cape in The Race : Leeuwin is in the firing line ...
