Scottish BUSA Qualifiers at Bardowie

Author: JP McCaldin

The weekend of the 3rd and 4th February saw the final leg of the Scottish BUSA qualifiers held at Bardowie just north of Glasgow. The racing held in RS 200’s and Laser 2’s was dominated by World Student Yachting champions Strathclyde University, for the second year in a row. The team of Ruairidh and Chris Scott, John Reeki, Stuart Meldrum, Tom Wilkins and James Allen dominated winning all their matches and should qualify for at least the quarter final of the event to be held in April at Cambridge.

Second was not so clear cut with the remaining automatic place in the finals going down to he last race. That place went to the Edinburgh A team of Jamie Hilton, Ben Schooling, Gareth Williams, Tim Hirst, Ross McKercon and Stuart Gardner, despite loosing to Dundee in their final race. Aberdeen who were piped to the second place and Strathclyde B who came fourth both go forward to a playoff, with some English teams for places in the finals and should make it to Cambridge.

In the ladies competition a very strong Glasgow team on Nichola and Alison Davies, Judith Hewitson, Sara Meldrum, Gemma Frier and Samantha Grieve continued Glasgow ladies five year domination of Scottish Universities sailing winning all their matches. Edinburgh will join them in Cambridge with two more wins than Strathclyde. Thanks to Linlithgow, Peterhead and Bardoie sailing clubs for the use of their facilities and Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club for their expert race management on the water throughout the qualifiers.
