Bough Beech 29er Open
Author: David Hopson
The first 29er Open at Bough Beech was held on the 1st of April. An eager group of travellers assembled, but lack of sufficient breeze forced a half hour postponement, prior to the arrival of force 1 to 3 with some sunshine. The light and shifty southerly conditions being quite a challenge for all competitors. Excellent windward/leeward courses were set by Race Officer John Hill and David Lightfoot.
All four races were fiercely fought. In race one, McGrane fought off the Hopsons and Gimson for a close finish. After two races in a strengthening wind the top three boats Gimson, Hopson and McGrane were on equal points. The third race was much slower as the wind decreased with much changing of places, Gimson taking the lead. The result was still open at the start of the fourth and last race. The Hopsons established a lead which was never challenged and they won this race. Gimson fought through to second place, displacing the Hopsons from the overall lead. Newcomer to the class, Mark Lawrence of Grafham, put in consistent results to finish fifth. Excellent close racing was had by all competitors.
