Scandia Life Cowes Week IRC Class 1 - Day 3

Author: Sue Warden-Owen

Irish eyes were again smiling at Skandia Life Cowes Week as Dublin's Colm
Barrington grabbed yet another victory in the top ranked class one fleet.

Barrington's 'Gloves Off' remains the boat to beat - winning the regatta's
third race by a massive six minute margin to further extend it's lead in the
overall rankings. It was not such a good day for Cork's America's Cup
veteran Harold Cudmore aboard 'Barlo Plastics' - although the prototype
Oyster design remains well placed for another top five overall finish.

The gusty breeze which has greeted the first two days racing slackened off
but racing remained at close-quarters across the regatta's 33 fleets - with
over 900 boats vying for space in the Solent. Barrington, from Dun
Laoghaire, has now recorded two firsts and a second and nearest rival, Tony
Mack's 'McFly', finished well down the fleet in seventh place.

Andy Beadsworth, Britain's Soling class representative in the Sydney
Olympics, continues to struggle aboard 'United Airlines'. His Cowes
performance has lurched from one disaster to another and the south-coast
based Olympic hopeful will certainly be looking forward to escaping down
under for final Games preparations next month.

Alongside 1996 Atlanta silver medalist Ian Walker, Beadsworth's 'United
Airlines' finished at the wrong end of the fleet again in 19th place.
