Oxford University Sailing Tour of Japan

Author: James Dickinson

Yesterday, a team of seven Oxford University sailors returned from their 10 day
tour of Japan. The team, captained by Nicole Johnson, had been based in Kyoto
and trained in 470's and Snipe's on Lake Biwa, in preparation for the official
match against Japan's premiere sailing University - Doshisha University.

This was the return leg of a trip made by a team from Doshisha to England last
November, where Oxford had triumphed in the official match 6-1. However,
just as the Japanese had struggled to find the speed in the Oxford Laser II's,
Oxford trailed their rivals in the Snipes that were used for the main racing.
Indeed in the official match, sailed in near perfect conditions of force
3-4 winds and warm waters, Oxford were unable to emulate their success in the
UK - the Japanese running out 5-2 winners. Johnson commented that "it was
tough to come here and expect to be on the pace with guys who train day in
and day out in these boats, so we were happy to at least take two races from
them". The facilities that Doshisha University enjoyed were certainly
superior to any university sailing in England and British universities could
do well to try and emulate the example of Japan.

The hospitality that the Japanese extended to their English guests was
overwhelming and the tour proved the strength of relations between Oxford
University Yacht Club and university sailing in Japan. All will now look
forward to the next tour, scheduled for 2002.

Meanwhile, Oxford commence their preparations for the approaching university
season, with Jemima Hardman the new Captain of Sailing. Chris Webber will
captain the first team. BUSA (the main university team racing championships) is
scheduled for next April and is to be hosted by Cambridge University.
