Rolex Commodores’ Cup English Team Trials

Author: RORC

Race 1 was set as a windward/leeward course with 6 legs of 1.5 miles, in the Western Solent between MacMillan Reeds 50:46.1N, 01:22.1W and orange inflatable bouy at 50:45.3N, 01:24.2W. All yachts started cleanly at 1040, spread equally along the line. A fresh breeze of 18 knots from 245 degrees powered the trialists around the course with `Shakermaker 2`, Paul Churchill taking first place from `Team 2XL`, David Murrin/Stuart Greenfield and `Quokka V` Peter Rutter third.

Race 2 was also a windward/leeward course, and the orange inflatable bouy moved to 50:45.5N 01:23.4W to shorten the course to allow for 8 x 1 mile legs. The start for race 2 followed promptly after the finish of the first race at 1230. Once again all boats had a clean start and the fresh breeze continued to hold up without the threat of rain. Subject to the outcome of two protests `Yeoman of Hamble`, David Aisher once again took line honours and fist place followed by `2XL`, David Murrin/Stuart Greenfield and another third place for `Quokka V`, Peter Rutter.

Race 3 used the same course as race 2, though this time a short sprint of 2 times round was detailed by the team selectors with a short beat to the finish. To keep the trialists on their toes a 1420 start was announced, 15 minutes after the last finisher of race 2. Only one yacht was OCS at the start with the rest getting away clear. `Yeoman of Hamble` completed a hatric of line honours but was pipped to first place by `2XL` on corrected time (subject to protest) pushing `Yeoman into 2nd. `Quokka V` remained consistent gaining a further 3rd place.
Wind remained 245 at approximately 15 knots for both races.

On the last race Yeoman of Hamble sought redress from the Race Committee for confusion over the finishing line. The protest committee hearing at the Royal Southern Yacht Club agreed not to change the results of race 3 but would write to the Selection Committee informing them of the exact circumstances of the finish. Selection is not being done on points alone. John Dudley, David Arnold and Chris Mason form the Selection Committee. David and Chris had followed the racing in a rib all day watching closely the performance of all the crews.

Next week-end will see the trialists taking part in the 112 mile Morgan Cup race. The final week-end for selection will be 23-25 June at the IR2000 Championship to be held in Cowes.
