Finn Gold Cup - Day Five

PERCY AIMS FOR TOP TEN

Weymouth turned on the weather for the penultimate day of racing at the
2000 Finn Gold Cup with Iain Percy refocusing his sights on a top ten
finish after a stunning come back in race six followed by a clear win in
race seven.

Under clear blue skies with an 8 - 10 knot cooling breeze, the 90 boat
fleet started under a black flag for the first start although with nearly
twenty boats over the line early, the race committee decided to abandon the
start just seconds before the off.

Iain Percy opted for a conservative start second time around, arriving at
the top mark in the top ten and aiming to pick up places offwind although
after an altercation with a British competitor, he scuppered his hopes of
making inroads on the downwind fleet. "I had a bad first race after I hit
someone at the top mark and had to do a 720 penalty turn. A stack of boats
got through and I dropped to somewhere in the 30's and I had to really work
flat out to get back to ninth. Mateusz (Kusneriewicz) rounded ten boats
behind me and was second at the finish which is frustrating," said Iain.

Emilos Papathanasiou (Greece) won the race.

After a third rank committee boat end start in the next race, Iain led the
fleet around each mark to win by several hundred yards. World Class
Performance team mates Andrew Simpson and Charlie Cumbley slotted in just
behind Percy at the last windward mark although lost one and two places
respectively by the finish.

For Iain, with his world championship hopes over after he lost yesterday
evenings protest (re opened from Monday, series race two), he has now re
focused his sights on a top ten finish. "I estimated that the top ten would
be about one hundred points. It could be higher if its light as people
aren't so consistent but I'm already on 106. I'll need a couple of race
wins tomorrow but it at least gives you something to aim for," said Percy.

After yesterday's race was postponed due to high winds, the race committee
has elected to run two races tomorrow (Friday) to take the world
championship battle to the full nine races.

WEYMOUTH; Finn Gold Cup after 5 days (after 7 races with discard):
