BEADSWORTH, PARKIN AND SYDENHAM WIN SOLING WORLD MATCH RACING CHAMPIONSHIP BRONZE MEDAL

Great Britain's World Class Performance Sailing squad added another World Championship medal to the two that Shirley Robertson and Ben Ainslie have already laid claim to this year when Andy Beadsworth, Barry Parkin and Richard Sydenham won the Bronze medal at the Soling World Match Racing Championships - the Infanta Dona Cristina Trophy - at Cadiz in Spain this afternoon.

Beadsworth (from Titchfield in Hampshire) and his crew, middleman Richard Sydenham (from Hamble in Hampshire) and bowman Barry Parkin (Windlesham in Surrey), ranked fourth in the ISAF world standings, were always among the leading pack throughout the three day regatta.

They finished the opening round robin (where every crew sails each other) in fourth and then the second round in second position overall to guarantee their berth in the semi finals against ISAF World Match Racing Champion
Jesper Bank (Denmark).

In conditions Beadsworth described as "not dissimilar to what are expected in Sydney, very light, shifty and streaky," the British crew lost the first race against Bank, drew level in the second but were beaten in a close
deciding third race by a matter of one windshift.

"Jesper (Bank) commented to us afterwards how tight it was from his end of things. He believed it could of gone either way and the person who won that would have won the finals and the title", remarked Beadsworth, who watched on as Bank went on beat Phillip Presti (France) 3-0 in the best of five
finals for the world title.

Beadsworth, Sydenham and Parkin were faced with 1996 Olympic Champion Jochen Schumann (Germany) in the Bronze medal sail off, winning 2-1 and adding the Bronze medal to the Soling European Match Racing Gold they won last October.

"It could easily have been Gold but we've won a medal and that's what it's all about", added Andy. "The top six in the world are so tight. There's very little difference between any of us at the moment but we've been up
there at every regatta we've sailed over the last year and we've still got some improvements that will increase our pace".

The Soling Fleet Racing World Championships follow on from here, starting on Sunday 2nd April with Beadsworth and crew being joined by Ian Williams, Mark Nicholls and Andy Hemmings in the second British Soling.

"Another world class performance medal for Andy and his team to go with the Gold won at the European Match Racing Championships last year. I'm sure this will be a real boost to their confidence moving into the Chernikeeff
Sailing Regatta - Olympic Trials," commented RYA Olympic Manager John Derbyshire.

Andy Beadsworth's Reaction:

A very tough day. Every race was to the wire. No more than two lengths pretty much all the way round. Disappointed not to have won, but very happy to have won a medal. Could have easily been down the fleet. Every match was very close.

    Interesting points:

  • If Madro had won 12 instead of 13 races Presti would not have made the final 9.
  • If Doreste had beaten Presti, Jesper would not have made the final 8.

Won the bronze medal on the last run to the finish of the last race. Jochen ahead and penalised!!!!
