505 Maubuisson 2000 - Grand Prix des Vins de Bordeaux

Author: Jean-Baptiste Dupont

It is tradition for the French to race the "Grand Prix des Vins de Bordeaux" in Spring over a long week end. Despite several top French sailors did not turned up due to the period and the school calendar, 33 boats went to Maubuisson in the Bordeaux area to race this famous Rendez Vous.

The race is sponsored by the Chateau Arnauld and every competitor who attends the prize giving ceremony gets a bottle of this famous wine hence the attendance... (this year we received a 1994 bottle...) Weather was pretty nice the two first days with shifty but consistent wind easterly and then westerly types. The lake is very influenced by the thermal breeze generated by the Atlantic Ocean just 4 kms away. On Saturday the wind fall to nill and then turning around every 10 minutes preventing from racing more than one race. Sunday gave some great sailing before the storm broke shortening the final race for safety reasons (many lightings cracking over the fleet).

Philippe Boite with a new crew had to fight hard to win the race given the very close battle at the top of the fleet with talented sailors challenging the reigning champion, in many occasions his speed was pretty average compare to the contenders. Francois Fisher was leading the race overall until the breeze built up. In those conditions he is still to find out how to build speed with his Duvoisin. Pierre Soulier who bought a recent Rondar was sailing beautifully and had he not miss the start of the first race could well have done better than third overall, his results are very promissing with a new crew and with some more experience he is likely to be seen at the top often.

The Club hosted beautifully this regatta with great courses (Olympique types) and smart decisions when necessary. The fleet is pretty homogeneous and racing was fun.

Jean-Jacques Grandchamp who finished 32 overall is a former Finn and Dragon champion. He just joined the class and is racing a top Collignon boat owned formerly by Alain Boite . Jean-Jacques is also a sailmaker and for his debut was showing some very interesting things with a 16 in
his second race (Jean-Jacques only raced on Sunday).

The French class is really pleased to see that the attendance to this Grand Prix is increasing over years with newcomers such as Jean-Jacques entering the class.

Overall results:
