Carsington Sailing Club Laser Race Training & Open

Over the weekend of the 24th and 25th June Carsington Sailing Club held race training on the 24th and the Midlands Traveller Open on the 25th.
On Saturday 24th 22 Lasers, from Carsington, Burton, Trent Valley and Shustoke, arrived to be greeted by force 4 winds. Jon Emmet, the coach for the day, held a briefing and then it was on the water for boat handling exercises. After lunch a series of 4 short races were held and finally the whole fleet had to tack and gybe to the whistle while following the coaches boat. As the wind increased this proved to be an interesting exercise for all helms, some of which improved their boat righting skills. A debriefing followed and the consensus of opinion was that an excellent time had been had by all.
Following the race training expectations were high for the Open Meeting held on Sunday 25th June, kindly sponsored by UtraSport UK who donated a range of Neil Pryde bags. Wind conditions, and a clash with another regional meeting at Hollowell, restricted the entry to 27 boats with several other helms deciding not to enter despite attending on the day. The Race Officer, Adrian Stoggall, started the first race after a short postponement. The wind that arrived for the start promptly disappeared and only one lap of the course was sailed with the race being won by Ian Jones followed by Jon Emmett and Grahame Newton. Vigorous roll tacking was the order of the day and appeared to provide the best form of propulsion !!.
Over the break for lunch the wind failed to materialise and the Race Officer made the decision not to sail the final two races. The results for the meeting were therefore based on the only race sailed.
