Scandia Life Cowes Week IRC Class 1 - Day 7

Author: Sue Warden-Owen

Another solid top three place keeps Dublin's Colm Barrington on top of the heap at Skandia Life Cowes Week.

Barrington, who has enjoyed Cowes success before aboard his former yacht 'Surfing Shoes', is now in pole-position to take overall class honours in the Class One fleet.

However, his Corby 38 'Gloves Off' still faces competition from Russell Hodgson's 'Maverick II', who bagged his second race victory in light airs today.

Cork's Harold Cudmore stays in the hunt for another good placing aboard another new Corby-design 'Barlo Plastics'. Cudmore, who lives on the Isle of Wight, struggled in the light and variable Solent breeze today after close-quarter racing with Kit Hobday's perennial Cowes achiever 'Independent Bear'.

Today the Class 1 fleet were racing for the Rocking Chair Trophy, where Barlo Plastics finished seventh. For the first time at the regatta, light winds delayed class start times although a freshening afternoon sea breeze lifted conditions slightly.

In the Class Eleven fleet dominated by Farr 40's, Glynn Williams and Kevin Sproul's 'Wolf' secured the overall title with a race remaining. Five other boats have collected their silverware early led by Cowes most consistent performer - John Taylor. Taylor has only lost one race this week - a major achievement considering he started the week with just handful of his crew members.

'This week has been difficult because our regular crew have all had work commitments and it has been a case of literally picking people up from the harbour,' said Taylor.
