Laser South Wales Travellers at New Quay Yacht Club

Grey skies greeted the intrepid few visitors who travlled to New Quay, West Wales for the penultimate event in the South Wales Laser Travellers Series, sponsored by Scott-Bader and Rat Rigs. However, the light wind remained steady and strong enough to give everyone a good day’s sailing. Unfortunately, the sun only peeked out from behind the clouds just as the last race ended!!
The first race started with a short beat followed by a long run which meant plenty of lead changing. However, the subsequent beat stretched the fleet with Ben Davies battling with Nigel Tinkler and Jon Lockett. However, Tinkler made the most of a Lockett’s hesitation over which was the next mark. Tinkler went on to win from Lockett and Davies. Luke Richmond had been in in contention for the first lap but missed a ’gate’ and was DSQ’d. After lunch, the breeze had veered and was dying so 2 short races were sailed back-to-back. Lockett and Steve Berry battled this race out as Tinkler was OCS at the start and had to return against the tide, but he recovered well to come 4th. The former GP14 World Champion, Ian Willis joined the fray for the last 2 races and showed that despite a ‘tired’ boat and little experience in the Laser, he has not lost ‘the knack’ with a 5th and a 2nd! However, going into the last race it was ‘all to play for’. This time it was Lockett who returned to the start line and Tinkler who got away, opening up a large lead on the long beat. Tinkler steadfastly held his lead to take the ‘bullet’, and the event.
The Travellers’ Series is going to the wire once more. The winner of the next event at Tresaith on 20th August will undoubtedly win the Series. Tinkler, Lockett and Steve Marshall (BSSC) are the prime contenders.
