Volvo Ocean Race Leg 2 - Concern Mounts for Crewman

Race Headquarters has received a message from Roger Nilson, the doctor onboard Grant Dalton's Amer Sports One, reporting that Keith Kilpatrick, from the USA, is sick with a stomach illness. Amer Sports One, currently in sixth position, is approximately 1500 nautical miles south west of
Australia. She is currently 196 nm behind race leader SEB, and the nearest boat to her is News Corp who is 155 nm ahead. Amer Sports Too is 422 nm behind her.
Kilpatrick is currently receiving antibiotics and morphine, and is on a
saline drip and the boat's limited medications are now running out.
The Australian Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre has been alerted and
the Australian Coastguard has been asked for assistance.
Amer Sports One is currently out of range for airborne medical evacuation
however, the Australian Search and Rescue Authority is looking at all the
options available to assist Kilpatrick and his concerned crewmates.
Nilson continues to monitor Kilpatrick's condition. Amer Sports One is
the only boat to carry a medical doctor, and Roger Nilson has competed in
this race five times.
Amer Sports One is in regular contact with medical advisors in the UK,
whilst Kilpatrick is being treated.
A further report will be issued as soon as the next course of action has
been confirmed.
