ASSA ABLOY and Chris Larson (35) announced today in Annapolis (USA) that the American helmsman/tactician will join the ASSA ABLOY crew in the Volvo Ocean Race. Larson has been part of the team since June 2001. Up to now the former Yachtsman of the Year has been supporting the ASSA ABLOY Racing Team on rules and tactical issues onshore.

Leading up to the invitation to join the team in its training camp in Gothenburg, Larson sailed with Navigator Mark Rudiger on Carrera during the Annapolis to Newport race in June 2001. The cooperation was successful. Carrera won the race on line honours and broke the record.

Skipper Neal McDonald is convinced that Larson will add experience in close racing tactics, supporting Mark Rudiger on strategy and meteorology. "Chris Larson is one of the most successful inshore helmsmen and tacticians around. I have raced against him a great deal and he is one of the world's best in that area. A dedicated man with experience sailing the America's Cup but also offshore races and of course lots of inshore races."

Larson will focus on tactics and strategy. McDonald comments, "This race has become so competitive, it is almost the longest inshore race, so Chris is a very welcome addition to the team using his strongest quality as tactician. Another major advantage of Chris is that he has been part of the team and fits in easily."

Larson will start leg three and will return for leg five. During leg four, from Auckland to Rio de Janeiro, he has commitments for Key West Race Week. Larson said in the Annapolis Yacht Club, "I look forward to joining the team in Sydney and sailing aboard ASSA ABLOY. I am very aware of the fact that we need to get ASSA ABLOY on top of the leader board. It's not going to be easy due to the fierce competition, but the team has what it takes to get the job done."

Next to that the team is glad to see the return of Guillermo Altadill. This experienced Spanish helmsman and trimmer is returning to join the team as planned. Altadill was absent from leg two for family reasons. Frenchman Hervй Jan and Spaniard Chuny Bermudez de Castro Muсoz sailed leg two and
will be replaced for the next leg.
