SAP Ausmaid dismasted off NSW Coast in Sydney Hobart Race

Author: Peter Campbell

Two times winner of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, SAP Ausmaid, is among three more retirements overnight as the fleet continues to battle strong winds off the New South Wales South Coast in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s 57th annual race south in the Tasman Sea.

SAP Ausmaid, Overall handicap winner in 1996 and 2000, broke her mast about 1am today, with another South Australian-owned boat, Secret Men’s Business, also being dismasted half an hour later.

The third retirement in the early hours of this morning is Broomstick, the former round-the-world Vendee Globe Race competitor which pulled out with damaged rigging.

Yesterday, as the fleet battled 30 knot south-westerly winds, four prominent competitors were forced to withdraw, including one of the line honours favourites, Australia Skandia Wild Thing from Melbourne, along with two other Melbourne boats, Cadibarra and Simply Red and the 1999 race winner Sting, from Sydney.

Meanwhile, the Volvo Ocean Race competitors taking part in the 57th CYCA Sydney Hobart Race as part of their Sydney to Auckland third leg continue to lead the fleet as the yachts beat to windward in rising seas towards Bass Strait.

At the this morning’s position report, Tyco, representing Bermuda was leading from the German yacht illbruck, with Swedish entry Assa Abloy seven miles astern.

Tyco and illbruck were sailing boat for boat, one mile north of Montagu Island. Astern of Assa Abloy came came two more VO 60s, Team News Corp and Djuice

Outside of the Volvo Ocean 60s, the best placed yacht was the 66-footer, Grundig from Sydney while pre-race line honours favourite was back in ninth place after suffering sail damage in a vicious thunderstorm north of Jervis Bay last night.

Then came Bumblebee 5 which was 16 miles north of Montagu Island and leading the IMS division overall on corrected time.

The Defence Forces entry, Lady Penrhyn reported this morning that had dropped a seasick crewman, Paul Garai, ashore at Kiamia but they were continuing in the race.
