Two new crewmembers to join Team SEB

Author: Anette Bargel

Tony Rey, USA, and Sean Clarkson, New Zealand, will be joining Team SEB in the Volvo Ocean Race as new crewmembers. Rey will be replacing David Rolfe, watch captain from New Zealand who has decided to leave Team SEB. Clarkson will be replacing Rodney Keenan, New Zealand, who already has a
contract with another boat for the Sydney-Hobart Race since earlier on.

David "Dingo" Rolfe who has been with the Team SEB project since its beginning has decided to leave the team for personal reasons. During the last Whitbread he sailed with many of the SEB crewmembers onboard Swedish Match.

"My situation in the team has not developed in a comfortable way for me and therefore I have decided to leave Team SEB," David Rolfe says.

"It is sad that David will be leaving us and he has been in the core crew for many years. He has made his decision, and of course we will respect it, " skipper Gurra Krantz says.

American Tony Rey, 34 years old from Newport will be replacing him. Rey has a vast experience of ocean racing and of international match racing. Last year he sailed the Sydney-Hobart race onboard Tyco, and he raced one leg on board Chessie Racing during the last Whitbread. In 1999-2000
he was part of the after guard on the America's Cup challenger Young America.

"With Team SEB, I'm fortunate to join a team that is already strong in every area. I think it is important to maximize the tactical firepower for the shorter legs, and I hope I can contribute there," Tony Ray says.

New Zealander Sean Clarkson, 32 years old from Auckland will be replacing Rodney Keenan. Clarkson has done two Whitbreads, one on board New Zealand Endeavour in 1993-94 and the latest onboard Toshiba. He has also competed in three America's Cups, the Olympic Games once and he has won Sydney-Hobart Race twice.

"I'm very excited to be invited to sail with such a strong team, especially on this leg as I am from New Zealand and I am looking forward to sailing in to Auckland," Sean Clarkson says.

Onboard SEB there are now two Swedes, six New Zealanders, two Brits, one Dutch and one American. Navigator Marcel van Triest, who left Team SEB temporarily during the second leg, will be rejoining the team in Sydney one week prior to the start of the third leg.

The start of leg 3 is on December 26th at 13.00 hours local time. (In GMT it is -11 hours, which is 02.00 hours).
