Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club Winter Series - Week 5

Author: Neal Gibson

A moderate force 2-3 greeted the sailors this week which looked to build but never happen.

Race 1

The start saw Neal Gibson in his Laser and Wilding/Cook in the Enterprise start on port while Ian Henery in his Laser opted to start on starboard. Neal got off to a good start but half way up the first beat capsized to throw away what little lead he had. Ian Henery powered away form the Enterprise and Neal in his Laser, leading by a clear margin. For the next few laps Neal tussled hard to get past the Enterprise with the Ent always coming out on top, then finally Neal getting past the Ent duely capsized to let the Ent pass him with ease. By the second last lap Neal had passed the Ent but not gained enough margin to beat them on handicap.

Race 2

The wind had freshened a bit by race 2 meaning the Lasers of Henery and Gibson powered off the start line ahead of the Ent. Ian Henery pulled away from Neal Gibson on the first lap leaving the Ent of Widling and Cook in their wake. Neal Gibson thinking this time the Ent wouldn’t interupt his race. Ian Henery was leading all the way round the race track as usual. But on the last two laps Neal was catching. Race 2 seemed to be going well with no incidents so far. On the third to last leg Gibson in the Laser was rapidally catching Ian Henery in the other Laser, then the Ent on the beat passed to windward of Neal Gibson causing a spectacular windward capsize to throw away any chance of first place. Luckily Neal's head being under water saved most of the profanities being heard.
