Club Med just seven miles off the lead

Author: Club Med Media

Thursday 4 january at 1400 this afternoon Club Med had moved closer to the lead of The Race. Only seven miles separates the big Blue Catamaran skippered by Grant Dalton from the American boat Team Adventure skippered by Cam Lewis in distance to sail to the finish. On board Club Med the mood is positive inspite of the the fact that more and more of the crew are coming down with the flu'.

Commenting on life on board Dalton said : " Its really difficult to run things on the boat with various people being ill, and that starts with me ! ! ! That being said we are sailing well and the boat is in good shape inspite of these difficult light upwind conditions. "

At the 1300 Radio Press conference on board media man Jacques Caraes had these comments on the leading boat : " I don't know if they are really faster than us. They have definitely sailed better than us so far, better routing and tactical choices, but I think we have managed to nibble back into their lead thanks to a windshift that we benefitted from first. Right now we are trying to make some Westing and get to more favourable winds as quickly as possible. "

Dalton addeed that he felt the crew were now working much better together. " We are changing sails a lot less than we were. We aren't in a match race with Team Adventure, we can't afford with the distance left to sail to get into games like that. On top of that, I really don't think Playstation will be too hindered by her 48-hour stop in Gibraltar. Having now put back to sea they will be the first to get the favourable North Westerly winds that the fleet is expecting soon. "

On board doctor Alexis de Cenival has not been idle. Having already administered several stitches on Frank Proffit's cut eyebrow, he has had to put both Grant Dalton and Nicolas Pichelin on anti-biotics for their flu'. Then there is the Spanish crewman Guillermo Altadill who twisted his ankle yesterday. " Guillermo caught his foot between the mast and the mainsail and ended up twisting it. He was in quite a lot of pain last night, but it didn't stop him from taking his turn steering the boat. I bandaged him up well, he'll have to avoid running around on the trampoline netting for a few days. "
