The British Tornado fleet are soon to be bound for South Africa, where the 2001 Tornado World Championships are being held during February. The event will be sailed from Richards Bay on the East coast of South Africa north of Durban.
Attending the event will be Britain's representatives in the Tornado class at the Sydney Olympics, Hugh Styles and Adam May, who are using this event to roll straight into their campaign for the 2004 Athens Olympics. They will be joined by Rob Wilson and Will Howden, runners up at last years UK Olympic selection trials. The young team of Leigh Macmillan and Joe Hutchinson, training partners for Olympians Styles and May and top B14 helm Steve Lovegrove, who has rejoined the class and will be competing with crew Martin Sellars.
The class AGM will be held at this event and will clarify the classes' future towards the Athens 2004 Olympics. This will mainly be concerned with how to implement the changes to the boat which will include a spinnaker, twin trapeze and larger mainsail. These additions were stipulated by ISAF at the November conference so as to make the Tornado racing a better spectator event.
