Can Stevie Morrison win the Fireball hat trick?

Author: The United Kingdom Fireball Association

Excitement mounts as local sailor Stevie Morrison attempts the International Fireball Championships hat trick at the Typhoon Fireball National Championships 2001 that start in Exmouth on Sunday 12th August.

Following his outstanding wins at the International Fireball Class World Championships and European Championships in Italy last month local sailor Stevie Morrison is poised to mark his place in the class history books. Already he’s created family history by winning the World Championships exactly 20 years after his father, Phil Morrison. If he wins the National Championships next week he will achieve an amazing hat trick by becoming the first person to win all three championships in one year since dinghy-sailing legend Ian Pinnell in 1988.

The Typhoon Fireball National Championships 2001 start on Sunday 12th August and continue throughout the week as some of the best sailors in the country battle for the title. Trying to stop Stevie will be a host of well-known names from the sailing world including the current National Champion and 2000 World Champion DJ Edwards and his crew Vyv Townend. The pair were unable to attend the recent World Championships to defend their title so will be wanting to make sure they don’t lose their hold on the National title. Hard on their heels will be other well-known names such as Dave Wade, Chips Howarth, Tim Rush and many others.

Not all the competition will be taking place at the front of the fleet though as the Fireball Class is known for encouraging sailors at all levels. Everyone at the event will have something to set their sights on as there are prizes for silver and bronze fleets, over 40’s, under 21’s, old boats, novices and several others besides. Together with the incentive of the generous prize sponsorship provided by the UK-based sailing clothing specialist Typhoon International the array of prizes on offer guarantees some hot competition.

There’s still time to enter if you haven’t done so already as Bob Southworth will be taking last-minute entries at Exe Sailing Club on Saturday August 11th. As well as involving competitive racing the Fireball National Championships are always a social affair and newcomers are very welcome.
