Wayfarer Scottish Championships at Port Edgar Yacht Club

Author: Mark Maylin

25th & 26th August 2001

With the notable absence this year for various reasons of the stalwarts of Scottish Wayfaring i.e Tim and Ruth Jones, Kim Cameron and of course messers Porter and Gibb the event was very much a local affair with only 4 local boats taking part. As nice as it is to win an event with a title it would have been equally as satisfying to have been able to claim to have read Ian Porters sail numbers at the finish in a much larger fleet.

Six races were scheduled over two days, the first was a real drifter and only Alison Leask and Chris Hall in W1235 Jenny Wren made it round the gybe mark at the first attempt with the tide keeping the remainder agonisingly close but unable to get round. About an hour later Jayne Farrell and Ian Elder in W6925 Tic Tac rounded as well and they too were bound for Norway, Chris and Alison were well on their way to Deep Sea World by this time and were glad when the race was abandoned so they could start paddling back.

The race officer then postponed proceedings for a time but good humour prevailed and a gentle F1 -2 set in from the east. Race 2 was then sailed and won by Mark & Heloise Maylin in W4550 Andante, 2nd was Tic Tac, 3rd were Guthrie Stewart and Ann Tweeddale in W6135 Phoenix with Jenny Wren in 4th place.

Race 3 was abandoned due to the lack of time and all the competitors retired to the clubhouse where the bar and a hot meal were waiting.

Races 4, 5 & 6 were sailed back to back on Sunday in bright sunshine and a wind which started at F2 for the first race of the day and increased by one force for each the next two races with 18 knots being recorded on the committee boat.

Each of Sunday's races were also won by Mark & Heloise in W4550 Andante who emerged as overall winners with the real competition going on for the remaining places. 2nd overall were Alison & Chris in W1235 Jenny Wren, 3rd were Jayne & Ian in W6925 Tic Tac and 4th were Guthrie & Ann in W6135 Phoenix.

The event though small was sailed in the spirit for which Wayfarer sailors are renowned and this coupled with the wonderful prizes of electrical goods provided by the sponsor Carl Dyson make it a regatta worth attending. I would also actively encourage anyone willing to travel to Scotland (it doen't always rain, honest!) to attend next years Scottish Wayfarer Championships to make it an event worthy of the superb silverware on offer.
