SEB and illbruck make the break in the Volvo Ocean Race

Author: Volvo Ocean Race Media

The two green hulls of SEB (Gunnar Krantz) and illbruck (John Kostecki), five miles astern, have made the bold move of breaking from the westerly direction of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet, opting for a more southerly course over the last couple of hours.

With the fleet sailing in only 6-7 knots of breeze, it is believed that SEB and illbruck are looking for get a slingshot into the Atlantic from the strong tides off Ushant, despite being some 30 nautical miles offshore.

There is now a 21 nautical mile spread from North to South with Team News Corp in the far North closely followed by Amer Sports Too and djuice.

Tyco is spearheading the charge to the Meridian of six degrees west with Roger Nilson and Grant Dalton on Amer Sports One currently agreeing with Steve Hayles' (Tyco navigator) reading of the forthcoming weather patterns.

Before the start it was openly acknowledged that the first 1000 nautical miles could make or break the leg so the results of the current split over the coming hours and days could be crucial. As illbruck skipper John Kostecki said last night, "This first leg looks very complex weatherwise,
so this leg we might see the biggest differences in ideas of where to go".

It may only be day two at sea but every knot of wind and boat speed still counts.
