Laser Radial Open and Women’s World Championship Day 5

Author: Jeffery Martin

The strong winds forecast for today failed to materialise but at least there
was enough wind to finish two of three scheduled races today.

In the first women's race Katarzyna Szotynski from Poland had a comfortable
lead round the first mark from Sarah Frickey FRA and Alana Slingsby AUS. In
the light a variable conditions Slingsby overtook Frickey on the second
upwind and got through Szotynski on the downwind. Szotynski slipped to
third behind Frickey on the final upwind.

The second womens race in slightly fresher 8 knot winds saw a complete about
turn. Turkish sailors Deniz Karacaoglu and Kevser Muezzinoglu gambled on
the right hand side of the course paying on the first upwind and it paid off
big time. Karacaoglu had over half a leg lead at the first mark with
Muezzinoglu a very comfortable second. Their lead was so big that they held
it to the finish.

Previous leader, Nicola Muller GBR had a poor day with two 14th positions
that has dropped her down in the overall results.

Overall leader Frederik Lassenius was first to show in front of the first
fleet of the male 6th race. Alexandros Logothetis overtook him on the
downwind and maintained his lead to the finish. In the second fleet Orkun
Soyer from Turkey led from start to finish. Behind him most of the place
changes were on the last short windward leg to the finish. Peter Cupac CRO
climbed from fourth to second, whilst Luis Alberto Olcese dropped from third
to fifth behind Matias Del Solar CHI who had dropped from second in an
exciting finish.

In race 7 it was the turn of James Smith from Great Britain to lead from
start to finish. Behind him life was not so easy for Carlo Krpeljevic CRO
who made steady progress from ninth after the first reach to finish second
after taking 6 places on the downwind and upwind legs of the outer loop of
the trapezoid course. Lassenius did enough in this race to maintain his
overall lead after recovering from 11th to 5th. Russian Timophey Zhbankov
had to work a lot harder for his win in the second fleet. He dropped to
third on the second upwind behind Dimitris Theodorakis GRE and Matias Seguel
from Chile. On the next downwind Zhbankov was back in second ahead of
Vangelis Chimonas GRE with Seguel in fourth. Again it was the last windward
that decided the final placings with Theodorakis dropping to third behind
Chimonas as Zhbankov took the winning gun.

The men's fleet is split into gold and silver for the last day of racing and
3 races are scheduled. With the possibility of a second discard if all 3
races are completed and all the top sailors racing together for the first
time the championship is far from over.

Results after 7 races (with 1 discard):
