European Match Race Championships in Helsinki - Day 3

Author: Andy Beadsworth

2 flights were uncompleted in group 2 by the end of play yesterday. To
complete the round robin today required all skippers to agree. One did not
so the following Qualified through from group 2 to the quarter final round
robin; Presti, Celon, Nordberg

From Group 1; Schuman, Beadsworth, Lindberg

Beadsworth vs. Presti

Won the start and extended as Presti had a riding turn on his winch on the
first tack. We had a big lead that quickly evaporated when we sailed into
a hole at the top mark. We were passed down the first run but put him under
a lot of pressure at the leeward mark resulting in him dropping his
spinnaker over his bow . We lead then till the finish.

Beadsworth vs. Schuman

Won the start. Schuman was over the line with a penalty. Setting a trap
and stopping our boat approaching the start line Schuman tried to escape,
miss judged and hit us whilst tacking behind, then managed to be over as
well. We lead at the first mark and kept him under control to the finish.

Beadsworth vs. Lindberg

An even start with us starting on port taking the right. The favoured side
all day. A port shift however gave Linberg the lead and also the right.
Followed from afar for the rest of the race.

Beadsworth vs. Celon

Won the start and lead at the top mark but were under pressure at the
leeward mark when a gust brought Celon right up to us. Making the same
mistake as Presti we dropped the kite over the bow on the drop and lost the
lead to Celon who lead to the finish.

Beadsworth vs. Nordberg

Won the start with a penalty in hand. Lead and extended. Nordberg had a problem at the leeward dropping his spinnaker and was out of the race. As it happened we would have qualified win or lose. Left us on 3 wins.

Other qualifiers were; Celon 3 wins, Linberg 3 wins, Schuman 3 Wins

Presti (2 wins) missed out by losing last race to Schuman. The winner basically making it through.
Also Nordberg (1 win) when Celon was disqualified.

Semis and Final tomorrow. The winner will choose their opponent. I think Celon wins on count back. It is unlikely that he will choose either us or
Schuman so I guess we will sail Schuman. Great warm up for Sydney. We are 2-1 up so far at this event.
