ACI Cup / World Match Racing Championships - Day One

Author: Editor

The first day of the World Match Race Championship which is the third regatta of the prestigious Swedish Match Grand Prix Sailing Tour saw 32 matches from the first Round Robin Series.

The wind was favourable reaching sometimes 24 knots. The best result was achieved by Dean Barker from New Zealand who won all his matches. After he came back from the racecourse, Barker told us : “We had a really good day. It was a good start of the event and we had some really tough races. A lot of the guys that we were up against really pushed us pretty hard so we were lucky to come away at the end of the day with five wins. It could have ended quite differently. We had a great race against Tomislav and his crew and it was really close all the way around during most of the race. It is fantastic when you had races like this and you end up winning. We enjoy most of the tight, close races. It was good fun.”

Frenchmen Bertrand Pace won five points while Dane Sten Mohr ended the day with four and a half points. Australian Peter Gilmour got three times to the finishing line before his oponents. The biggest surprise was Andy Green from Great Britain who won three races. Frenchmen Francois Brenac was awarded two and a half points after three wins because the International Jury took half a point off his result. Brenac got a penalty after a conntact with his opponent in the race, a country fellow Bertrand Pace. Home skipper Tomislav Basic lost the first three races but then recovered and won two races as well as Luc Pillot. Danes Jesper Bank, the last year’s World Champion, and Jesper Radich Johansen both won one race. The only contestent without any points today is Jes Gram-Hansen, also from Denmark.

All skippers emphasized the good quality of the ACI Cup organisation during today’s Press Conference. A big interest for this event is confirmed through the large number of spectators who visited the grand stands and the Event Village on Sustipan, a favourite park of the town of Split, overlooking the racing area. The event is continuing tomorrow.
