Rock Sailing Club Lark Open

Author: Andrew Paley

Rock Sailing & Water Ski Club hosted the annual Bank Holiday open meeting over the weekend of the 29th April to 1st May. Glorious sunshine & a cool Easterly breeze greeted the numerous travellers.

The first two races were held within the harbour, over Olympic triangular courses with gate starts being set from the clubs brand new Committee boat. Pathfinders for the first race were Nigel Hufton & Sarah Allen who took and early lead, closely followed by Neil & Fiona Ravenscroft, and Dougal & Nigel Scott. Ravenscroft overhauled Hufton on the run to take the lead, which he then held to the finish. The Scott brothers were also showing good early season form and took second with Hufton third, and Paul Gardner and Andy Paley taking fourth from Peter Cook & Janet Exelby.

Race two pathfinders, Gardner and Paley took the lead with Emma Harris & Helen Woodward a close second, hotly pursued by the pack. Ravenscroft pulled ahead of the pack, and a very tight battle began for the first three places. Ravenscroft finally squeezed through to take his second win, with Gardner just holding Harris off to take second. Scott defended well to take fourth from Martin Gillam & Matt Griffiths, with Richard Dowsett in sixth.

Sunday’s racing was held in the mouth of the estuary in more breeze, with much stronger gusts – perfect for those recovering from the previous evenings social! Race 3 Pathfinder Scott lead around the windward mark, unfortunately the first reach proved too tight for spinakers resulting in numerous place changes with Harris opting not to fly her spinaker and taking the lead. Hufton recovered well to take second place, with Ravenscroft in third & Gardner fourth.

Race 4, Pathfinder Gardner again benefited from the right hand side of the course, taking the lead from Harris and Sarah Richards & Tegwyn Roberts. However, Ravenscroft were again showing excellent form and just squeezed inside Gardner at the windward mark on the penultimate lap to take the lead. Gardner finished second again just holding off Harris, with Richards taking fourth from Glen & Marion Enkel.

Monday’s racing was again held in the estuary mouth in tricky wind conditions as the sea breeze was fighting the easterly gradient breeze which resulted in some quite significant shifts. Ravenscroft again dominated the fleet making the most of his early lead whilst the fleet became becalmed at the leeward mark to take his fourth win and the event overall. Harris battled through to take second from Richard & Jenny Bennett with Gillam in fourth and Hufton in fifth.

The final race started in slightly more consistent breeze but with the tide now having more influence. Hufton made and impressive start, talking the lead that was to remain unchallenged. Harris managed to hold off Ravenscroft to take second, with Scott taking fourth.
