Laser Radial Open & Women’s World Championship Day 1

Author: Jeffery Martin

DAY 1 - 24 July

Coming from six continents, the 156 competitors from 25 countries at the
Laser Radial Open World Championship enjoyed great conditions on the opening
day. A 15 knot northerly wind at the start built to 20 knots to tough but
exciting sailing for the male fleet sailing in two starts per race and the
women sailing in a separate fleet.

The women's racing was dominated by the British ladies, Nicola Muller and
Jayne Singleton. Jayne, who only started sailing Laser Radial in April
after a time in the Europe class, was second round the first mark but soon
took first place to lead for the rest of the race. In the second race
Nicola Muller, taking time out from her Europe campaign, led from start to
finish. Not having sailed a Laser Radial for 2 years she said "I have been
practising hard since I have arrived and had to re learn a few things. The
Laser Radial is a lot more physical than the Europe requiring more body
movement whereas the Europe is more technical. It was good fun to get back
in the Laser Radial. I really enjoyed it". Behind her Jayne nearly caught
Katarzyna Szotynski from Poland at the finish but was not helped by a
capsize on the second upwind leg.

In the male fleet it was a good day for Turkey with 3 different sailors
leading home their respective fleets. Vangelis Chimonas from Greece led
from start to finish in the first race of the day. He did not have it so
easy in the second race rounding the first mark second behind Ali Kenal
Tufekci TUR he passed him on the downwind only to be overtaken again on the
upwind. "We had a very good race. He was just better than me in a few
moments. We had a fight in the last upwind but I lost"!

Kemal Muslubas TUR was first in the other fleet of race one but the biggest
win of the day went to Guray Zumbul in the second fleet of the second race.
Fresh from his success in the previous week in the Laser Radial Youth
Championship he seemed to be still recovering from his celebrations in the
first race finishing only 13th. A quick pep talk with his coach in between
races and the news that his main competitor in the youth fleet, Anders
Nyholm DEN, had gained a second obviously had an inspirational affect as he
finished over half a leg ahead of Fredrik Lassenius from Sweden.

Overall results after 2 races (with 0 discards):
