Laser Radial Open & Women’s World Championship Day 2

Author: Jeffery Martin

The second day of the Laser Radial Open and Women's World Championship saw a
change to the regular wind pattern and some significant changes in the race
positions. After a short delay for the wind settle for the start of the
first race the race was started in 12 knots of wind which never built unlike
previous days.

Beth Lygoe from Great Britain was first to show in front ahead of Nicola
Muller GBR and Jeanette Dagson SWE. By the next mark Muller had dropped to
fourth and Jayne Singleton GBR had moved up to third behind Dagson.
Singleton continued her progress and had climbed to first at the end of the
downwind /upwind outer loop with Muller in second. Muller lost out to
Poland's Katarzyna Szotynski on the downwind. On the last windward leg
Singleton successfully covered a two pronged attack from Szotynski and
Muller to take the winning gun.

In the first fleet of the male first race Jake Bartrom from New Zealand
overtook Hakan Yilmaz TUR on the first reach. The two of them held their
lead until the last upwind. Behind them Petar Cupac CRO and Vangelis
Chimona GRE were on a charge. Having rounded the first mark 14th and 20th
respectively they had a great downwind leg with Vangelis climbing to 4th
with Cupac just behind him. By the time they had completed the next loop
Cupac was 3rd with Chimonas 4th. On the last windward leg Cupac and
Chimonas both overtook Yilmaz to fininsh second and third behind Bartrom.

In the second fleet Ali Kemal Tufekci continued to show the significant in
depth improvement in the Turkish team leading his fleet from start to
finish. By the second mark team mate Sait Izmit had climbed from 4th to 2nd
to track Tufekci all the way home.

The second race of the day saw a change in conditions with the wind dropping
to 7/8 knots and pressure lines becoming more pronounced. Worst affected in
the women's fleet was overall leader Nicola Muller who dropped from 12th to
27th on the second windward leg which also saw race leader Sarah Frickey
from France dropping from 3rd to 6th. When someone loses another gains. On
the same leg Brazil's Livia Vieira climbed from second to first to regain
the lead which she had lost to Bonnie Holt GBR.

The first fleet in the male fourth race had the best of the wind. However a
number of sailors in all the fleets were caught out as the breeze tended to
veer rather than back as had been the case on most of the previous 10 days.
As a result the first mark roundings in both men's fleets saw a number of
new faces and the favourites having to play catch up. First and second in
the first fleet, Andre Streppel BRA and Luka Radelic CRO rounded the first
mark 17th and 15th respectively. Streppel's joy was short lived however as
he was over line at the start along with fourth finisher Frederick Lassenius
and 8 others. In the second fleet of the fourth race there were similar
changes as the right hand side of the course was favoured. If that was not
enough the wind disappeared completely for a few minutes as the fleet near
the end of the final reach even though it was still blowing 5 knots on the
rest of the course. There was some place changes in the middle of the fleet
before the wind built again to 8 knots for the final windward leg. Rounding
the last mark first Thomas Baumgartl from Brasil picked up a yellow flag
penalty from the jury and dropped to 4th and letting second placed Salvatore
D'Amico ITA got through to take the gun.

Overall results after 4 races (with 0 discards):
