XOD Nationals at Cowes Week 2001 - Day One

Author: Mark Jardine

The first day of Skandia Life Cowes Week was blessed with a good wind from the Southeast and patchy sunshine. If the week continues like this then we are in for a good one.

The 77 strong XOD fleet started around 12.45 from the White Group start line and headed off to Elephant in the Gurnard Bay. Early leader was X-119 'Lone Star' who had a good start on the favoured island end and tacked soon to make the most of the ebb tide. After the windward mark 'Lone Star' pulled away across to the Lepe Bay.

Racing continued with a windward-leeward around marks in the mouth of Southampton water followed by an excellent strong wind broad reach down to North East Ryde Middle with much ducking and weaving amongst the Class 2 & 3 yachts.

Stuart Jardine on X-119 pulled out a good lead on the chasing pack who concentrated on maintaining their positions.
