National 12s at Salcombe Yacht Club Regatta mid-week report

Author: Jane Jones

After an excellent 54 boat National Championships at Porthpean, twenty-eight Twelves have made their way to Salcombe for the Yacht Club Regatta.

After three days of close racing the fleet remains tight. Race one on Sunday saw a battle between the Meadowcrofts and the Thorntons with Meadowcrofts eventually claiming victory and the Greenings settling for third.

Race two on Monday saw three boats battling around the whole course for the top positions. The Ibbotsons were just able to sneak away from the Thorntons on the line to secure a win by just two boat lengths. The Meadowcrofts remained in contention with a third.

Race three on Tuesday saw very light winds and strong tides, many of the fleet struggling to get the right side of the line. After a variable and challenging race the Ibbotsons crossed the line first only to discover they were OCS leaving Meadowcroft to take victory and the ever-consistent Thorntons in second.

Halfway through the week John and Katy Meadowcroft in Fools Gold, 3429 remain in top spot. In the difficult conditions of Salcombe Harbour will they be able to hold their nerve?
